Where Stars Land (2018)
Review of Where Stars Land / 여우각시별
I am going to be honest, I had never heard of Where Stars Land before I went down my strange little rabbit hole when it came to watching every major drama Rowoon appeared in during the past few years.
I don’t know why I haven’t heard of this drama before, but when I ended up finishing Extraordinary You, I ended up going to Rowoon’s page on Viki and seeing what other shows he’s been in.
I ended up clicking on this one by accident, spotted he was in the supporting cast, and decided why not. I had nothing else to watch, so I sat down and watched this drama over the course of two weeks.
It was a bit slow, but me finishing it was a sign that I didn’t hate the drama. I like these dramas that are split into thirty-two shorter episodes because it makes me feel so much better about binge watching.
Something about those thirty minutes versus an hour in front of the screen makes me want to pat myself on the back.
Let’s dive into the review!
After starting her newest job at Incheon Airport, Han Yeo-reum finds herself at odds with her male coworker.
Han Yeo-reum is seen as a troublemaker at Incheon airport, and at the very beginning of Where the Stars Land, she has been moved to a new unit because she has been seen as incompetent at her old one.
Right before she heads for the bus on the first day at her new job, it starts pouring, and she shelters under place with a man who she will soon find out is one of her new coworkers, Lee Soo-yeon.
She’s already late for her new job, and at Passengers Service, she often goes out on the floor to help those in need and also monitor the situation throughout the terminals.
This puts her into conflict lowkey at first with Lee Soo-yeon, and she ends up meeting her friend Ko Eun-sub to vent about the circumstances of her new job. She’s still seen as the problem spot and Lee Soo-yeon ends up sending her on a job where he deliberately misleads her, it puts them on the wrong foot even more so.
We also end up adding the security team to the mix of all of this, as one of the female members has a crush on her captain and will also become Yeo-reum’s roommate after she briefly lives with Soo-yeon.
The series is essentially a series of conflicts happening at Incheon going to make the workplace situation a bit more dramatic, whether it’s an emergency landing through fog, a plane on fire, a potential bomb situation, or a rude customer throwing his water all over one of the security people.
These then draw into one of the main conflicts, which is Lee Soo-yeon and one of the bosses. Many years before, the two were very good friends, but when Lee Soo-yeon got into an accident because of the other, he ended up almost losing his leg and arm.
What ended up happening is he has a sci-fi situation where he has a machine that helps him act normally, but it’s granted him above normal strength. So when he ends up picking one of the sticks at the airport, he dents it completely because he can’t pick it up like a normal human being would.
There’s a lot of suspicion about him initially because no one except his boss is aware about the situation, and then Soo-yeon’s former friend enlists the head of the security team to go find out the truth about how Soo-yeon operates after such an accident.
But this causes a lot of trauma for Soo-yeon because for a while, he was in his wheelchair. When he starts to fall deep for Yeo-reum, he grapples with the fact he can be left a disabled person because his machine is failing him.
It’s impacting his health to the point where he can get himself killed, but if he continues, he will end up dead.
Eun-sub also finds out about his secret because he’s lusting for Yeo-reum badly, but admits defeat and ends up letting her date Soo-yeon when they finally get together after all these episodes.
Overall Thoughts
It’s a cute drama. I think there’s a lot to just accept with this show, because we never do explore the mechanics of how Soo-yeon is able to survive.
It’s asking for believability, and then he randomly goes off to the United States and is seemingly cured of the problems that have been plaguing him for so long. But overall I’d say this drama is decent.
The plot isn’t absolutely terrible, and the characters are somewhat likable throughout. My favorite is the female security guard who ends up living with Yeo-reum.
Her little crush on her captain was cute, especially when she bought him socks from the Kakao store and he said they were ugly.
