Sweet Bite Marks (2022)
Review of Sweet Bite Marks
I really don’t know what compelled me to watch Sweet Bite Marks one unhinged morning. I woke up at seven am, much early than usual, expecting to do some homework or something much more productive than what I was about to do.
I opened up Viki because I told myself I was going to have like fifteen minutes to sit and watch a drama, I clicked into the Chinese section, and then I saw this sitting in right in front of me. I don’t know what the algorithm was trying to say, as this wasn’t something that would be in my area of what I’d watch, but somehow I ended up pressing play anyways.
I think I’m pretty adventurous when it comes to what I watch and am willing to go outside of my comfort zone, and that’s how I end up watching shows like these. I will admit I would have never lasted all the way until the end if it wasn’t as short as it was, although it was such a rollercoaster ride of plot. Ten minute episodes covering the good chunk of a manga in one season? You’re asking for such a wild ride.
Let’s get into my review.
A human girl gets caught up with a vampire prince.
Basically, in this drama, humans and vampires live side by side, although there are some obvious prejudices going on between them in their day to day lives. The main female character is Du Xiao Xin, who blends in with her classmates and is just trying to get by to the next day.
Her little brother is sick and she’s willing to do anything for her, but one day everything is going to be completely upended when she runs into a vampire prince named Luo Yi.
He declares her one of his enemies, and says that all of the vampires can do anything to her. So this makes her a target when she goes through the halls of the schools, especially when she had lived her life so peacefully before. But when she is attacked by a female vampire and her group of bullies, Luo Yi saves her. It becomes more obvious he is falling for her, despite wanting to get a taste of her blood at first.
The course of this small series is then a push and pull between the two. Luo Yi keeps trying to be nice to her—or as nice as he thinks he is, because, if we’re going to be honest, he’s kind of toxic—and enticing her to try and get closer to him.
But Xiao Xin is resisting against his charms and wants to be her own person, and when her brother is said to be sick, she even runs to his side and leaves the school. However, because we know this is a romance, she’s going to succumb to that impulse towards the end,
There are also some side plots about Luo Yi’s friend and another vampire who tries to take advantage of Xiao Xin, especially when he steals the family’s crest from her.
Anyways, tons of tropes loaded in this one when it comes to vampire lore, especially with the biting, how they act towards humans, and the possessive nature of the male character.
Overall Thoughts
Like I said before, I wouldn’t have lasted longer if this wasn’t twelve episodes and only ten minutes per episode. But man this was such a time, because these episodes were so short it spirals through the plot. I would’ve liked to have more time with these characters and what they represent, slash what are their background, or go into the lore of the vampires, but we really don’t get any of that because it’s such a sprint.
I’ll probably watch season two as a guilty pleasure, but this certainly was quite the time.
