March 2021 Favorites: Film, Books, Life
The Women (1939). Directed by George Cukor. Costumes by Adrian.
It’s time…to round up the favorites.
This month really flew by fast! So much happened in it…I received the Critical Language Scholarship, had a bunch of poems published, cooked good food, and read/watched a lot of movies. Speaking of the entertainment factor…here’s what I thought of as my favorites during this month.
Film/Television
The Women (George Cukor, 1939). We watched this for my costume in film class, and oh man. The jewels! The characters weren’t my favorite, but I enjoyed the all-women ensemble cast. Not a man in sight—just the way I like it.
Chef’s Table. I love food and I love the history of gastronomy. Guess what else I love? Hearing other people’s stories. Chef ‘s Table is perfect for that; my favorite episode has been the Thai chef trying to revive traditional Thai culture.
Somebody Feed Phil. Honestly wasn’t my favorite, but…
The Twilight Princess walkthrough I binged watched. I also watched a Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass one. Yes, I know I’m a huge Zelda nerd. But hot take: Twilight Princess is the best Zelda game. It fits my melancholy vibes perfectly, has the best characterization in the series by Midna, and grants us one last glimpse of the Hero of Time in the form of the Hero’s Shade. It’s perfect and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox. No, I totally didn’t rewatch this. Not at all. Lee Dong-wook’s hair was just too pristine.
Audrey (Helena Coan, 2020). This was stunning and insight into Audrey’s life, about how lonely she was compared to the mass fame she saw during her lifetime. With archival footage and interviews with Audrey’s family and friends, this was really interesting to watch. I actually ended up rewatching it.
Books
The Veiled Suite: Collected Poems. This is a collection of Agha Shahid Ali’s poems, and man were they beautiful. Highly recommend.
I Was Told There'd Be Cake: Essays by Sloane Crosley. I was investigating what nonfiction sells well for my purposes, and this came up. I enjoyed the author’s tone and use of humor, even if I wasn’t a fan of it myself.
Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking by Marcella Hazan. I had to guys. I just had to.
Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table by Ruth Reichl. I love food and discussing food if you can’t tell. Ruth Reichl is someone I admire, so her entire memoir about food and the table is my dream to read, obviously.
Life
Tortellini! I’ve been making this tomato soup with San Marzano tomatoes and tortellini, and my family devours this soup. It’s so good.
Wireless keyboard; I got this and a laptop stand to boost my WFH setup game (and because I’ve been working on a lot of written projects these days), and it’s a game-changer.
Bullet journals; I bought a ten-pack, but it was so worth it. I filled up thirty pages in three weeks, so I think I’ll blow through them.
Twilight Princess. Play it. It’s my favorite ever.
Rice cakes (ddeok). I made stir fry with rice cakes—it’s heavenly.
