I May Love You (2023)

Review of I May Love You / 对你不止是喜欢

At the beginning of 2024, when I got back from visiting my cousin in Malaysia, which I blogged about on this website, I was on such a Chinese kick. I was thinking about how to get back into studying Mandarin, as I was beginning to forget all of the Chinese I’d studied for so many years.

Going to Malaysia really was an awesome experience because of how I got to practice my Mandarin for the first time in years, and it was so exciting to talk to the Chinese locals and see their surprise when I could speak some proper sentences. That was so thrilling to me.

So when I got home, I watched a ton of Chinese dramas, which I have been blogging about here on this website as well. It’s become a bit of an addiction, and after watching Only for Love, I was sucked into this show because of how the protagonist is a writer too.

Let’s get into the review!

Screenwriter Tang Xin is in love in her boss, which causes some major complications.

Our protagonist in this drama is Tang Xin, who has had quite the unrequited crush for years on her boss Tang Yu. She’s been harboring this crush in secret for so long, but if she confesses and it goes wrong, then that may lead to some disastrous consequences when it comes to her job as a screenwriter.

Turns out he is in love with her best friend, but when her best friend makes it clear to Tang Yu that they are never going to happen, that’s when Tang Xin sees the opportunity to take her shot in the love department.

She boldly confesses to Tang Yu that he has been the object of her affections, but then he decides to turn her down. In fact, it really seems like he didn’t even think about it when he turns her down, as he does it kind of quickly.

Disheartened, Tang Xin decides the best thing to do is submit her resignation from the company.

But because she actually is one of the better screenwriters at the gig, this could be disastrous for them. He doesn’t want her to leave at all, so he needs to find a way to keep her there.

Over the course of 24 episodes, these two are going to relearn how to work together, and, in the end, as we can expect they’re going to get together. I found the romance in this show to be quite lacking, if we’re going to be honest.

The romance arc is just unbelievable to me, and I feel like the lead actors lack any sort of chemistry in the end. I think that’s why I couldn’t believe he changed his mind—they just didn’t feel right together. There’s some push and pull happening, which I expect from these kind of shows.

Overall Thoughts

Honestly, I think I needed something to rot my brain, and this show did the trick. I wasn’t highly invested in the plot and its characters, and I found it to be poorly written at some points.

That said, it was a little bit painful to get through to the end of the series. They sprinkle in side arcs to keep things interesting, and the B plot involves the second female lead finding her way and getting cast as an actress, then finding love herself.

I liked her character more, so I enjoyed the B plot, but then we didn’t get enough of it. Oh well, I’m sure someone out there enjoyed this show more than me!
