Bridgerton (Season Three)
Review of Bridgerton’s Season 3
For the longest time, I did not understand the hype for Bridgerton. I had attempted to watch the first season when it came out all those years ago, but didn’t really care for it. I ended up watching Season 2, which I reviewed right here on this blog, because I was interested in Simone Ashley and Desi representation.
And I will admit, I loved Season 2. It might be because I have a thing for Simone Ashley and do South Asian studies as an academic interest, but I thought it was so well paced.
I went into Season 3 with high expectations because of it, although I have some overarching critiques of the show as well as someone who specifically studies colonial history.
Anyways, when Part One dropped I watched all of it immediately. I waited patiently for Part Two to drop by busying myself with a plethora of Asian dramas, and then I watched all of Season 3 Part Two in one go, as I was preparing to move to South Korea.
I certainly have some thoughts about this season! Let’s get into the review before I ramble too much.
Penelope grapples with trying to find a husband, being Lady Whistledown, and friend drama.
Our focus this season is on the character of Penelope, who, at the beginning of the season, is on the market for a new husband. She doesn’t know this directly, but her family’s funds rely directly on the production of a male heir, and her sisters seem completely and utterly hopeless and having a kid, let alone a son.
That said, there are other things going on. Eloise and she had a fallout, and now Eloise is hanging around the classic mean girl esque Cressida, who wants to go after the same guy as Penelope. They’re both eyeing up a reclusive guy who loves nature and the wild, and seems vaguely uninterested in all of the affairs going on in this world.
At the same time Penelope is running her paper as Lady Whistledown. No one but Eloise and her other friend knows at this point still really, but as Colin Bridgerton returns from his escapades abroad, he decides to help Penelope find a husband.
This is a recipe for disaster, as Colin finds himself falling for Penelope pretty quickly. It doesn’t help that she stirs up drama through Lady Whistledown by acting mean towards herself and Colin, as it would make people think less that it was her.
We also have some other B plots going on throughout the series. We see the one Bridgerton brother going on his own romantic escapades, which would certainly prove scandal on the gossip circuits if he were caught doing what we were doing. Anthony and Kate are trying to have a child, and are still on their grind.
Francesca also is having her debut on the romance circles of high society, but she doesn’t seem interested in a lot oft he men who are coming up to her. Despite being a Bridgerton, which generates a lot of interest, she wants to choose her own path of love. She’ll find that eventually.
A good chunk of Part Two is the inevitable fact that Lady Whistledown is going to get caught. We’ll see how poorly Colin reacts, as well as how other people are going to rise to the occasion and take advantage of it whenever possible.
Overall Thoughts
Honestly, I liked Season 2 better still. I thought this season was poorly paced, and we focus too much on the B plots because of how there is so little going on with the main couple. The plot lines also seemed kind of forced to me, as well as the antagonistic intent.
By the time I got to the ending of Part 2, I wanted the show to be over. The lead couple has a lot of chemistry, but it feels like it’s just the same problem coming up again and again, which made me get bored with the content quickly. I feel like this should have been six episodes.
Like I said, I thought Season 2 was better paced. I’ll still probably watch future seasons of the show, but I don’t know if I’d enjoy them unless they picked up.
Others enjoyed it more than I did, though, which is great! Taste is so subjective, and reviews are going to be across the board in general.
Go watch this if you haven’t already and want to.
