A Day in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania

We spent the day in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.

For Christmas in 2023, my eldest sister got my family gift certificates for a food tour in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. We thought this was the most random thing you could’ve possibly given us that year, as who was going to Kennett Square for a food tour? When these were purchased, the food tour was about $60 per person.

We’ve been around the area before because we had been to Longwood Gardens, which is just around the corner from this little town. If you have never been to Longwood Gardens, go! This might be the perfect pairing; food tour in the morning, then go to the gardens in the afternoon if you’re not staying the night.

We had to wait to book our food tour weekend in the spring, and it was through Taste Kennett Food Tours. They’ve been around for a bit, and have a lot of established connections in the area. They also don’t start their food tours until the weather is warmer, hence why we had to wait.

But when the time rolled around for our booked slot, we piled into my mother’s car. There’s a lot of street parking that’s paid during the weekdays, and some garages. Because we had booked our slot on a Sunday, parking was free and we found some space further up the main road.

Here’s how the day unfolded! I wish I took more pictures, but I did not, unfortunately, so this is a bit of a bare post.

The Taste Kennett Food Tour was certainly an experience!

This little food tour began at a market section of the town further up the main road, conveniently right next to where we had parked. We were the first ones there, so we collected our name tags and the little slips that would declare what kind of taco meat—we stopped in a local taco joint, as the guide told us there was a thriving Latinx community around here.

Throughout the course of the day, which is a walking tour, we sampled food from about ten different local spots. By the time we got to six our little party of four was whispering about how we were full; usually they gave you little samples, but one generous Italian spot gave samples of multiple different dishes, and they were a bit heavy.

Some of the standouts to me were the local Latinx spots, especially the Hispanic style ice cream shop that was located at the very end of the main street. We went there last, and had a single scoop of their ice cream. It was a pick the flavor you want situation, but my sister and I wanted the more Latin flavors. I got a fruit one that tasted similar to a persimmon, and my sister got the corn ice cream.

I’d get the corn ice cream next time; they recommend putting a little bit of spice on it before taking a bite. And man, those flavors worked unexpectedly well. Like I said: next time is for the corn ice cream.

I really liked the food tour, and I think I’d do one every so often or on vacation again. It was a nice little novelty, and we got to learn a lot about the area along the way from our guide. Like I had no idea this part of Pennsylvania was famous for their mushrooms, and they had an entire festival on them!

This is a cute little area to walk and shop around.

Once the food tour concluded, we decided to spend some time walking around the area. There’s not a ton to do around the main street besides these nice little restaurants, but there are some shops.

For example, there’s a candy shop that’s very old school. It’s also connected to a tea shop, and we spent some time in there after the tour. We had gone inside for the tour and acquired some candy and tea samples, but I wanted some more time to browse because there was a little bit of pressure when you’re in a large group.

Some other notable landmarks are the historical clock tower at the center of the town, and a hotel that’s book themed. I would totally stay in there as a little writing retreat, or if I wanted to go to the gardens the next day and needed a place to stay.

All in all, this is a cute area to stop in if you’re around. I wouldn’t make it entirely a destination to visit unless you’re local or going to Longwood Gardens, but there certainly are some nice places to eat around here.
